Dark Blue returns to TNT for its ten episode second season on August 4, 2010 at 9pm with a two hour premier event. I’ve seen both that event, which encompasses the episodes “Urban Garden” and Liar’s Poker” and episode 3 “Shelter of the Beast” which will air on August 11. I’m happy to say that though I all but wrote off Dark Blue in my review of its first season DVD, the show returns retooled and improved.

Following an elite undercover unit operating on the streets of Los Angeles, Dark Blue focuses on workaholic Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott), enigmatic bad boy Dean Bendis (Logan Marshall-Green), rookie Jaimie Allen (Nicky Aycox), and Ty Curtis (Omari Hardwick), a newlywed trying to balance his job and family life. Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer joins the cast for the second season, playing FBI Special Agent Alex Rice who works and clashes with Carter both professionally and personally. Helfer is an excellent addition, adding both flash and substance, not to mention some sizzling chemistry with McDermott. Carter is, overall, much less grim in the three episodes I watched and much more charismatic a lead. Dean’s personality becomes more fleshed out as he struggles with the ethics of undercover work while Ty’s marital issues are finally put on the back burner and we see him have some fun with his job. Jaimie, whose boyfriend Scott has left for San Francisco, has transferred her whining about the job to whining about Dean and their undefined relationship. She remains the weakest link. Guest stars shine, especially Jordana Brewster, who has an excellent turn as Maria, a drug dealer’s daughter Dean romances while undercover.

Plot wise, we finally have a multi-episode story as Carter’s team works with Alex to bring down a drug ring with ties to a particularly nasty Mexican cartel. The stretched out plot gives better story and heightens tension while the new partnership allows for more varied character interaction. Overall, the writing is tighter than last season with a more consistent tone and better dialogue. While there are still too many contrivances, I had to suspend my disbelief much less than in season one and became much more involved in the show. We see more of undercover work’s emotional cost for all involved along with the fun some of the characters have with their covers. Ty slipped back into one of his covers with almost glee while even Carter seemed to enjoy playing a Porn king.

Dark Blue still won’t be appointment television for me, but if these three episodes are any indication, this season should not only be an enjoyable one for fans, but it should attract some of the new viewers it desperately needs to survive. There is a welcome starting over quality with the tweaked characters and formula. I’m still not really invested in any of the characters, but they no longer bore me silly and I think Alex and Carter could become quite compelling. If you gave up on Dark Blue last season like I did, you should check out the season premiere because you might be happily surprised at the improvement.
